Born into home marked by profound dysfunction, Sandra Jarvis struggles to overcome the messages ingrained throughout her childhood. I’m not worthy. I’m not loveable. I’ll never be enough. The physical, sexual, and spiritual abuse of her childhood, all hidden behind the carefully crafted façade of a model Mormon home, leave her wondering if there really is a God—and if so, what must she do to prove her worth?
She marries young, hoping to escape the misery of her childhood, only to discover that you can’t run from the effects abuse. Bitterness and anger increase as she’s faced with seemingly endless trials—postpartum depression, a porn addicted spouse, an LGBTQ child, a cancer diagnosis, overwhelming debt, and fear. Constant fear for what the future might hold. With all of this overshadowing her world, Sandra thinks things can’t get any worse.
Until a tragic accident nearly severs her right hand. Although the physical damage brings an entirely new set of problems, it also gives Sandra an unexpected opportunity to not only recover, but to begin severing herself from the lies that have always ruled her life, the ones she’s told herself to prove she’s not enough. Only then does she discover that life is just what you make of it. That adversity can make you stronger. And that perhaps, things are exactly the way they are supposed to be.
Severed: a Memoir of Hope and Healing, is the powerful true story of finding purpose and peace amid life’s challenges. It provides proof that even in life’s darkest moments, hope is available, perhaps even plentiful.
WHY THIS STORY MATTERS
In recent studies, the Department of Justice reports that more than half of the population, men and women alike, will be affected by violent aggression or abuse at some point in their life. Sexual abuse accounts for 1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 boys, but then there’s domestic violence, emotional and spiritual abuse, and neglect. The ways in which humans harm each other are endless.
Add to that the traumas that we deal with each day—physical injuries, the death of a loved one, divorce, social anxieties, unrealistic expectations in our careers and at home, criticism—another list that is seemingly endless. Nearly everyone alive today will deal with the effects of trauma or abuse, which can lead to feelings of anger, self-loathing, and uncertainty. All of the negativity can be overwhelming.
The story told in Severed: A Memoir of Hope and Healing gives hope to those who’ve dealt with the effects of trauma or abuse and are ready to move forward, take back their power, and make lasting changes. The book touches on several topics:
- Marital problems
- Spousal abuse
- Death of a parent
- Parenting an LGBTQ child
- Severe depression
- Suicidal tendencies
- Pornography Addiction
- Strict religious systems
- Extreme medical issues
- And more…
It’s designed to give the reader a glimpse into these issues—and to identify those by which they may have been affected. It’s also designed to show the incredible power each of us carries within, power that can change our lives and ultimately, our circumstances, when we are willing to deliberately choose our path and believe in our futures.
Throughout the book, you’ll recognize yourself in Sandra’s struggles, hear your thoughts in her thoughts, and find yourself hoping she’ll make it thorough her challenges, because if she can do it, so can you! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be angry, or get triggered, or filled perhaps, even find peace. No matter what, you’ll relate, because of the straight-forward and vulnerable style of the author. Her willingness to be honest and raw, allows you to identify yourself within these pages.
